Why Tropical Fish Make Great Pets

Freshwater aquariums are a rewarding way to bring a piece of nature into your home. They’re relaxing to watch, easy to maintain, and offer endless variety - from the simple beauty of a school of neon tetras to the personality-packed antics of cichlids.

Gulf Coast Aquatics is a locally owned tropical fish store on Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota, open since 2019 and stocking over 120 freshwater display tanks. Owner Marcus Chen has 25+ years of fishkeeping experience, and every fish on our sales floor has spent at least two weeks in quarantine before sale. Fishkeepers from Lakewood Ranch, Siesta Key, and Bradenton drive to our store for the selection and honest advice they can’t find at chain pet stores.

Species We Carry

We stock a wide variety of freshwater fish to suit every tank and skill level. We also carry Hikari and New Life Spectrum foods, Seachem water treatments, and Fluval filtration to support whatever species you take home:

Community Fish - Peaceful species that get along with others, perfect for mixed tanks. Tetras, rasboras, guppies, platies, mollies, and more.

Cichlids - From colorful African Malawi cichlids to personality-filled South American species. We can help you choose the right mix.

Bettas - Beautiful male bettas in various colors and fin types. We carry both common varieties and specialty bettas.

Catfish & Bottom Dwellers - Corydoras, plecos, loaches, and other cleanup crew fish to keep your tank healthy.

Goldfish & Koi - Traditional coldwater favorites. We’ll be honest about space requirements (goldfish need more than most people think!).

Rare & Unusual - We often have unusual species for experienced fishkeepers looking for something special.

Your First Aquarium Setup

New to fishkeeping? Here’s what we recommend:

Start with a properly cycled tank (we can explain the nitrogen cycle), choose hardy beginner species, and don’t overstock. Stop by our Sarasota store before you buy - we’ll help you avoid the common mistakes that cause people to give up on the hobby.

Already an experienced fishkeeper? Let us know what you’re looking for. We can often special order species if we don’t have them in stock. Whether you keep a planted nano tank in a Venice condo or a 125-gallon cichlid setup in North Port, we have you covered.

What Our Customers Say

"Finally a fish store where the staff knows what they're talking about. Marcus talked me out of buying fish that would've died in my tank. That's integrity."

Dave M. Sarasota

"My kids' first aquarium has been running 2 years now thanks to the setup advice here. No losses!"

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait before adding fish to a new tank?
Your tank needs to cycle first, which typically takes 4-6 weeks. We can test your water to confirm when it's ready. Never add fish to an uncycled tank - they will likely die from ammonia or nitrite poisoning.
How many fish can I keep in my tank?
It depends on the species, your filtration, and maintenance habits. For small tropical fish like tetras and rasboras, aim for about 1 inch of fish per gallon. A 20-gallon tank can comfortably hold 10-15 small community fish. Bring your tank details to our Sarasota store and we'll give you a specific stocking plan.
Do you guarantee your fish?
We quarantine every fish for a full 2 weeks before it reaches the sales floor. If a fish develops health issues shortly after purchase, bring in a water sample and we'll troubleshoot together at no charge.
Can you order specific fish for me?
Yes. If we don't carry the species you're looking for, we can special order from our network of breeders and wholesalers. Typical turnaround is 1-2 weeks depending on availability.
What freshwater fish are best for beginners?
Hardy species like platies, corydoras catfish, and white cloud mountain minnows are great starter fish. They tolerate a range of water conditions and are easy to care for. Avoid goldfish for small indoor tanks - they need 20+ gallons per fish.
How much do freshwater fish cost in Sarasota?
Freshwater fish at our store range from $3 for common species like guppies and platies up to $50 for specialty cichlids and rare imports (2026 pricing). Most popular community fish fall in the $5-$15 range.
